Cardboard Boat Race – A Day We’ll Never Forget There are moments in youth development that go far beyond training sessions, match days, or league tables. Moments where you see young people come together, laugh together, struggle together — and ultimately grow together. The Ocean Village Charity Cardboard Boat Race was one of those moments for Europa FC, and it will forever hold a special place in our hearts.
In August, the annual Ocean Village Charity Cardboard Boat Race returned, raising funds for the Cancer Relief Centre and the GBC Open Day. It’s an event built on creativity, teamwork, and pure community spirit — and this year, Europa FC showed up not just to participate, but to honour one of our own.
Building a Dream Out of Cardboard The Cardboard Boat Race was a fun and exciting event that took place at Ocean Village. Darren designed and built the cardboard boat. The event was a huge success, and it was a great way for the players to bond and have fun together. As Youth Development Manager, I’ve seen many talented people come through our doors — coaches, volunteers, parents, players — but Darren stood out in a way that’s hard to put into words. He was one of those rare individuals who could build something out of nothing. Give him a few plastic cups and the guy would build you anything. His creativity wasn’t just a skill; it was a gift he shared freely with everyone around him. Europa were lucky to have him onboard, and he didn’t hesitate when he was asked to help the club out with the Cardboard Boat Race. Not only did he build this marvel, but he also gave us all plenty of joy when the Green Machine came first. The vessel was unsinkable and could have gone on for a few more races. Watching the kids cheer, watching the parents beam with pride, watching the team paddle that cardboard masterpiece across the water — it was one of those moments that reminds you why community football matters.
More Than a Boat — A Legacy Darren didn’t just build a boat. He built a memory. A moment of unity. A day where our young players learned what teamwork really looks like. They saw what passion can create. They saw what generosity can inspire. And they saw what it means to give your heart to something bigger than yourself.
